Is Investing in Children’s Ministry Worth Your Time?

Ministry Leaders

Do you often wonder if it is worth the time and effort that you spend developing programs and preparing Bible lessons for teachers and children? Do you question whether you are having an impact in your ministry and if the children are even listening or learning anything?

Unfortunately, today’s environment and family habits/beliefs are quite different than they were a few years ago and this can make having a successful ministry even harder. Attendance for church and children’s ministry is at an all-time low in most areas and is no longer deemed a priority. Many children would rather stay home and play on their iPad, watch TV or play computer games; overworked, tired parents often don’t want the argument that comes with “forcing” their children to attend church services. And worse, social media seems to have a stronghold on both children and parents, offering a skewed view on healthy spiritual habits. By the time children are teenagers, they are confused, frustrated, often depressed, and do not know where to turn for help. What is accepted in society is totally different than the message you are providing as a children’s leader. How can you ever win?

It is an uphill battle, but we must keep trying! It is more important than ever that you do not lose heart; that you stick to the truth of God’s Word, even if you are just a “voice of one crying in the wilderness” (Mark 1:3 RSV). When it feels like you are being overshadowed by the contrasting world views, remember that the truth of God’s Word does not return void and accomplishes God’s purpose (Isaiah 55:11).

Years ago, it seems that the door was open just enough for the devil to slowly push his way into our lives; and now we are living with the doors wide open and in a society that does not know God. Today’s world has taught us what we are to accept and believe, but it is a great counterfeit. When we measure it against God’s Word, we see the fallacy and the false teachings that have infiltrated our everyday lives.

So, how do you combat these worldly influences that distract the children from hearing God’s Word?

First, you spend time praying that God reveals to you the path for your ministry. Take time to listen when God speaks to you — don’t fail to hear Him. As a children’s leader/teacher the Word of God and His direction is your priority — make sure you hear His counsel.

Second, spend time in God’s Word. It is in His Word that His principles and standards are presented to us, and it is by this measure that we can expose the counterfeit that seems so prevalent in today’s world.

This chart presents the contrast between worldly wisdom and God’s wisdom. Take note for yourself and for the programs you prepare.

Stand firm and strongly speak to what God says — follow His principles and let this be the focal point of your teaching. Believe in your heart that you are doing “God’s work” here on earth, and pray daily that you can have a life-saving positive impact on all those with whom you share.

In children’s ministry, we very seldom get the wonderful feedback that we are making a difference — but believe me, you are! Lead by God’s Word and all blessings will be yours.
